Last year, when he was named captain of the Montreal Canadiens, Nick Suzuki did what every good CH captain does: He promised to learn French. Geoff Gorton also made the same promise when he became the club’s vice president.
a result? If Chantal Machabe’s initiative did not bear fruit in the case of the coach, it is a different story in the case of the captain.
Last year, at the CH Golf Championship, there was a round table with Chantal Mashabi, Jeff Gorton, Kent Hughes, Martin St. Louis and Nick Suzuki. I noticed that he seemed to understand his coach’s answers in French to some extent.
But there is a slight difference between understanding and speaking.
However, we’ve just gotten proof that the captain is actually making progress in French. Why? Because there is a commercial in which we hear him speaking in French.
David Savard filmed a Pepsi commercial. It’s always funny when an athlete, who eats well, associates himself with Pepsi or McDonald’s, for example, but that’s not the point.
The Montreal Canadiens captain promoting Pepsi is the pinnacle of Quebecois culture 😅
Nick Suzuki’s French is impressive here. The accent and intonation are native to Quebec. It doesn’t happen overnight. As we all know, His Eminence is our evil leader 😎pic.twitter.com/U2Ts3bwHTT

As we can see in the ad, everything happens in French.
Suzuki may not have the most complex story lines and I don’t know how long it took to shoot, but the result is frankly impressive for a guy learning French.
We listen to him speak and feel the efforts of recent years. A pure English speaker cannot wake up one morning and make a sound like a Suzuki without putting in the necessary effort.
Doing a Pepsi ad also looks cool in Quebec.
But the important thing is the fact that the captain is making efforts to respect the culture here. This has not been done by previous Canadian captains, including [insérez le nom de votre choix] And Saku Koivu.
We agree that if you live in Quebec, it is easier for everyone to understand the majority language, right?
