KANO | Fourteen people were killed when a truck lost control near the northern Nigerian city of Kano, the country's road safety agency said.
The Federal Road Safety Commission said in a statement on Friday that the cargo truck hit Muslim worshipers leaving a mosque shortly after Friday prayers in Imawa village, 30 kilometers from Kano.
The statement added that the truck driver “lost control and collided with pedestrians who had just finished Friday prayers.”
“This unfortunate collision resulted in the tragic loss of fourteen lives and numerous injuries,” he added.
Accidents are common on poorly maintained roads in Nigeria, largely due to speeding and disregard for traffic laws.
According to the FRSC, more than 5,000 people died in road accidents in 2023, compared to about 6,500 the previous year.
But according to the World Health Organization, these figures do not take into account accidents that are not reported to the authorities. Annual road traffic deaths in Nigeria are estimated at about 40,000, according to a report published in 2023.
According to the United Nations, 1.3 million people die each year in road accidents around the world.
