South Florida was the victim of several days of continuous rain, and some roads quickly turned into rivers.
Several areas, including Fort Lauderdale and Lauderhill, received nearly a meter of rain in 24 hours.
“Such amount of rain in a 24-hour period is extremely rare in South Florida,” meteorologist Ana Torres Vazquez of the Miami Weather Forecast told CNN.
She also described recent days’ rainfall as a once-in-a-millennium event.
Fort Lauderdale Airport was also forced to close due to flooding of roads around it. It must remain closed until at least Thursday afternoon, which is when the situation is reduced slightly.
Hollywood’s mayor told CNN it was the most severe flooding he had ever seen.
Moreover, many videos shared on social networks show the consequences of these severe meltdowns.
Among the images that circulated widely on the Internet were cars stuck in the streets, planes crashed and a curtain of rain falling on the city.
Residents of some areas have even been seen kayaking in the streets.
Broward County residents had to be evacuated from their residences by boat because their home was flooded.
