In the NHL, it is not uncommon to see players requesting a trade in markets where it is warmer. This is (in part) why markets like Tampa Bay, Sunrise and Los Angeles, to name a few, are often popular destinations for gamers.
In the case of Florida, there are lower taxes as well.
However, even if many gamers would love to play in these hotspots, it doesn’t have to be for everyone. As part of a recent video posted by the Tampa Bay Lightning, team co-founders Phil Esposito and Henry Paul return to the case of Anatoly Semenov.
Semenov spent a few years in the NHL in the 1990s, and he wasn’t a bad player. However, after just 13 games in Tampa Bay (he was relegated there since he was selected by the club in the expansion draft) in 1992, he was traded after asking for a trade for a very simple reason: his wife thought it was too hot. , but she was also terrified of crocodiles.
So why are we called lightning anyway??
Phil has alllll the details on how we got the name itself.

Our colleagues at HabsolumentFan recently made the discovery.
Semenov and his wife arrived from Russia and have spent the past three years in Edmonton. Clearly, his wife was used to cold climates and, above all, wasn’t a big fan of alligators.
She saw one near their home in Florida, and it obviously affected her a lot.
Semenoff was eventually sent to Vancouver, where alligators are much rarer. The following year, the Anaheim Mighty Ducks claimed him in the expansion draft, and the Russian made stops in Philadelphia and Buffalo (interspersed with a return to Anaheim) before retiring.
That said, we’re talking about a pretty funny story, and Esposito and Paul clearly think about it with a laugh today. I guess they didn’t expect to have to trade a player so quickly for this reason, but in the end, it’s a great story to tell years later.
