Passion for recycling has become a unique company in North America

Ecorad is a company specializing in the renovation and electrification of cast iron radiators. The founder, Pierre Lemieux, started the company in Saint-Jean-Port-Jolie in 2008, although he has been interested in these operations for many years. Since then, the technologies he developed with his team have stood out and Ecorad has grown. In 2021, the company decided to remain in Saint-Jean-Port-Joli, but to move to a new factory. The 19,000-square-foot building is designed in the Art Massif de Saint-Aubert style and features a wood-frame structure. What is unique about this structure, according to Mr. Lemieux, is that a large part of the building is made and decorated with recycled materials. This indicates that recycling is not only the basis of the products that the company returns to new, but rather it is part of the factory framework that includes its activities.

The founder explains that since his childhood, he learned about recovery through his father, who would go with him on tours to collect things that had been thrown in the trash in order to restore them or give them a second life. Later in life, he became more specifically interested in cast iron radiators, objects that had fallen out of favor for many and were increasingly being replaced by new electrical appliances.

For Mr. Lemieux, cast iron radiators are not only useful, they are also true works of art. In fact, when we restore these devices that have sometimes been abandoned or poorly maintained in recent decades, it is possible to find finely designed models. Mr. Lemieux explains that at that time the molds used to form these radiators were fashioned from a wooden structure that had been made by artists. Also, the methods used to dispose of these devices are often very harmful to the environment and the health of the workers involved. He therefore finds it regrettable that these objects were not restored for the sake of the environmental aspect, but also for their artistic value.

400 visitors

The next day the first day of the project opened for the company to establish its foundation in 2008. M. Lemieux expanded this, he said that more and more of the restoring procedures were now in America in the North. On the side. So the team wanted to tour their new factory and show the different stages that Ecorad's radiators go through.

People first discovered the equipment used to move these objects, which can weigh between 400 and 1,000 pounds, and which are not always on the first floor. Then they visited the warehouse, which currently contains more than 3,200 refrigeration devices. And this is only part of Ecorad's inventory, another warehouse in the US also has about 3,000 visitors who then learned about the different stages of restoration, such as stripping, dismantling, finishing, etc. It was also possible to discover the electrification process developed by the company in order to make these devices more suitable for use in modern buildings.

Although Mr. Lemieux was there to answer people's questions, he wanted to stay more in the shade during these open houses while his team directed visitors. Ultimately, he confirms that he is preparing to succeed him and that he has complete confidence in the ten or so employees who embarked with him on the adventure represented by Ekrad.
