Police in Australia declare state of emergency after shooting in Queensland – International

Australian police have declared a state of emergency after a woman was killed in a shooting in the northeastern Australian state of Queensland on Wednesday.


Emergency services were called to a residence in South Mackay just after 4.30pm local time following reports that a woman had been shot.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found a woman already dead and a man suffering from life-threatening hand injuries.

At about 5:20pm, Queensland Police declared an emergency under the Public Safety Act in Robb Place, Paradise Street, Archibald Street, Kindermar Street and Denton Street. Police are currently looking for the shooter.

Officials have asked the public to avoid the area and ask people in the exclusion zone to stay indoors until further notice.

South Mackay is a coastal suburb of the city of Mackay, 970 km north of Brisbane, the capital of Queensland. As of the 2021 Australian Census, it had a population of 6,918.
