Young Canadian goaltender Cayden Primeau has practically all the assets of a National League caliber prospect, with one exception.
On Thursday night, the goaltender was hit by some shots from the Ottawa Senators in a bitter 6-2 loss. The whole team played poorly during this match, and Primo did not stand out from his teammates in this regard.
He was invited to “JiC” on Friday, where former NHL player Philippe Boucher analyzed the faults in Primeau's game, capable of the best and worst at the NHL level.
“He's got the mentality of a National League player, he's got the athleticism, and he's also got the movement, positioning and technique,” Boucher explained at the start.
Then he said, “But he doesn't have the hands of a National League goalie.”
“About three weeks ago, he gave away four or five goals from the glove side in the same game, it was very difficult for him,” he said.
According to him, Senators players will likely do their homework on the matter before Thursday's game. Thus, several shots hit Primo on the side of the glove or barrier.
“He has hands that are kind of like the American League,” Boucher added. We'll have to give him time. He depends a lot on his physical fitness, on his positioning (…) We are far from Marc-Andre Fleury who fights for every ball.
