The CRE publishes a public consultation to ask stakeholders about the proposal to increase communication capacity between France and the United Kingdom. While three power lines between France and the United Kingdom are in service (IFA, 2,000 MW, IFA2, 1,000 MW and Eleclink 1,00MW), four new connection projects are currently under study: Aquind d'une capacity 2,000 MW, FAB with 1,250 MW capacity, gridlink of 1,250 MW capacity, as well as a new project of 1,000 MW capacity through Ketlink.
The CRE has carried out a cost-benefit analysis which shows that, under certain conditions, a new interconnection project between France and the United Kingdom with a capacity of around 1 GW would be economically viable at European level.
However, the study highlights a more unbalanced distribution of forecast profits for the United Kingdom than for France. This decision will limit the sharing of project costs between the two countries.
Also, RTE has carried out a detailed comparison of the four schemes, allowing them to categorize on the basis of interest. CRE considers this classification appropriate. However, approval from the UK regulator Ofgem would be required to proceed with a project.
Interested parties are invited to respond to this public consultation by April 19, 2024.
