(CircleFinance.com) – Rio Tinto has called for the resignation of Energy Resources Australia’s (ERA) board chairman Peter Mansell, introducing new perspectives to tackle Ranger’s cost and schedule overruns. Project (Northern Australia).
Rio Tinto sought to work constructively with ERA’s Independent Board Committee (IBC) to find a financial solution to meet its rehabilitation obligations.
Despite this commitment, Rio Tinto is concerned that opposition to any new uranium mining on the lands of the Mirra people, the traditional owners, has not been adequately recognized in the financial plans presented by the IBC.
“Our commitment is to reorganize the ranger project area in accordance with the wishes of the people of Mirr. This will require a revamp of ERA’s board of directors,’ said Kelly Parker, chief executive of Rio Tinto in Australia.
Rio Tinto reiterates its commitment to successfully rehabilitate the ranger project area to eco-friendly standards similar to the nearby Kakadu National Park.
