The Ukrainian Nuclear Inspection Authority said that Russian forces were occupying the territory of the Ukrainian nuclear power plant in Zaporozhye, which was hit by fire at night, however, confirming that no radiation leak had been detected.
This plant is located in the south of the country, the largest in Europe. According to Kyiv, a Russian tank fire at the plant set fire to a building intended for training and a laboratory. Rescuers managed to put out the fire.
“The territory of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant is occupied by the armed forces of the Russian Federation,” the Ukrainian state body responsible for inspecting nuclear sites said.
“No change was observed in terms of radioactivity,” he added.
According to the same source, the crew is making sure of the proper functioning of the site and inspections are underway to determine the damage caused by the night’s events.
Of the six blocks, the first is separated, while 2, 3, 5, 6 are in the cooling phase, while 2 are in operation. The agency did not say, however, what the state of the blocks was before the attack.
“Nuclear security is now guaranteed,” Oleksandr Starukh, head of the military administration of the Zaporozhye region, said on Facebook. Ukrainian Relief said on Facebook that the attack had caused no casualties.
