Slap Shot fans were happy to welcome three of the film's stars, including brothers Jack and Jeff Hanson, during a tour stop Friday in Shawinigan.
This is the second visit to Quebec for the famous Charleston Chiefs hockey players, who can also count on the presence of goalkeeper Denis Lemieux. The three men signed autographs and took pictures with many fans who came to meet them.
“We're very happy to see the Chiefs in Shawinigan. It's a great event for the whole community, especially since it's a great classic in Quebec,” said one amateur interviewed by TVA Nouvelles.
The film's most ardent supporters arrived well disguised for the occasion with a haircut and glasses held together by bits of duct tape that we so well associate with the Hanson family. Although it appeared on the big screen in 1977, “Slap Shot” still attracts many people.
“It's an honor to see people dressing up. In the United States and here in Canada, we often see little kids dressed like the Hanson brothers, and it's an honor for us,” said one of the brothers.
“It's like that all over the world,” Denis Lemieux added. We went to Germany, and people know the lines. I even had to learn a line in German.
For their part, the Cataractes organized a special “Slap Shot” evening during the game against the Drummondville Voltigeurs at the Gervais Auto Center. The Hanson brothers even had to go into the home team's players' locker room to give a speech that the young hockey players probably won't soon forget.
“It was one of the first calls I made in mid-September, when I got into the office,” said Steve Turcotte, Cataract’s director of hockey management. I first spoke to QMJHL to see if it was right to do this kind of initiative. After getting the green light, we contacted the Hanson brothers. Everyone was so excited and wanted to do the tour.
