Surfer and “Pirates of the Caribbean” actor killed by shark

Surfer Tamayo Perry, known in Hollywood for his supporting roles, especially in the movie “Pirates of the Caribbean”, was killed on Sunday during a shark attack on the American Hawaiian archipelago, according to local authorities.

The 49-year-old professional lifeguard, an Oahu figure, was surfing at Malaekahana Beach when he was attacked by a shark in the middle of the day.

Local official Shane Enright explained during a press conference that emergency services were called “for a surfer who was fatally injured after a shark attack.”

She added that his body was “returned to the beach” and he was pronounced dead on the sand.

“Tamayo was a legendary sailor,” Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi welcomed, denouncing the “tragic loss.”

This former professional surfer made a name for himself in the early 2000s as one of the specialists on the Pipeline, one of the world's most dangerous waves and a veritable mecca of the sport, on Oahu's famous “North Shore.”

This notoriety allowed him to appear in the surf film “Blue Crush” (2002).

His foray into Hollywood subsequently allowed him to get other supporting roles, notably in the film “Charlie's Angels: Angels Will End!” (2003), in the series “Hawaii Five-O” (2011), and in the fourth part of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” saga (2011).

Shark attacks are a known danger in Hawaii, but they are rarely fatal: of 81 “incidents” involving surfers, swimmers and divers recorded over the past 10 years, only 5 people died, according to the authorities’ list.

A significant number of shark bites worldwide are due to “misidentification,” according to a 2021 study published in the Journal of the Royal Society.

In other words, sharks that attack surfers or swimmers have such poor eyesight that they may mistake them for their usual prey, such as sea lions.
