A Billboard spokesperson confirmed that the annual celebration of film and television has been “paused” this year as the show's format is reviewed.
The actor assured fans that the awards ceremony “will return in a new form in 2025.”
The show, originally called the MTV Movie Awards, was held annually from 1992 to 2019, but is no longer the popular cultural event it was for several years. In its heyday it attracted major movie stars and celebrities, but that is no longer the case today.
The awards were canceled in 2020 due to the pandemic and replaced with a high-profile show called MTV Movie & TV Awards: Greatest of All Time, hosted by Vanessa Hudgens.
The 2021 and 2022 concerts went off without problems, but the 2023 edition suffered from weakness timing. The Writers Guild of America went on strike five days before the ceremony, which was scheduled to be hosted by Drew Barrymore.
Then Drew Barrymore withdrew and the physical ceremony did not take place. It was replaced by a pre-recorded virtual ceremony without a host.
The news comes just months after MTV canceled the 2023 edition of the European Music Awards, which were scheduled to be held in Paris in November. Although the physical show was cancelled, the winners were announced online.
