A number of horse bones were found on a property in south-eastern Australia on Wednesday 17 April. An investigation has been launched by local police and health and environment authorities.
A terrifying discovery. The remains of more than 500 horses were found on a property in south-eastern Australia, leading to the opening of a police investigation involving health and environmental officials, we learned from the municipal council this Wednesday, April 17.
“Cadavers” and “skeletons” remains
The gruesome discovery took place near Wagga Wagga in the Australian state of New South Wales, a five-hour drive from Sydney and three hours from Canberra, after neighbors complained of a foul smell.
Wagga Wagga City Council said in a statement that “some of these carcasses” were only in the condition of skeletons, while other horses were “relatively recently killed”.
The number of dead horses is estimated at more than 500, with their carcasses dumped “at different locations on the property”, the council added.
Several agencies are involved in the investigation, including food safety officials and the state horse racing agency. “The matter is still under investigation and no further comment will be made at this time,” the municipal council concluded.
