Qualcomm finishes upgrading its mobile processor lineup with the launch of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4. The new entry-level SoC is supposed to supply its first Chinese smartphone very soon.
Qualcomm has launched its new Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 intended for affordable devices, and this new SoC seeks to refresh the entry level by adopting some modest but welcome features. It should theoretically lead to accessible mobiles that are faster, and have a slightly larger feature board.
In terms of specifications, Qualcomm Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 (aka SM4450) is based on 4nm etching from Samsung Foundry. It combines two high-performance Cortex-A78 cores clocked at 2.0GHz and six high-efficiency Cortex-A55 cores also clocked at 2.0GHz. All these nice guys are supposed to allow for 10% more performance compared to the first generation Snapdragon 4 processor. Qualocmm doesn’t offer any special novelty for the GPU part of its SoC….

In addition to up to 3200MHz LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage support, the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 can now manage a 108MP camera, two 16MP cameras (for a total of 32MP) or a sensor with no shutter lag. The chip is also equipped with a Multi Cam Time Filter (MCTF) which enhances digital noise reduction when recording videos. The new Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 also supports 1080p video capture at 60fps, 720p slow-motion video at 120fps, and can also handleElectronic image stabilization (EIS).

Qualomm mentions for the rest support Full HD+ displays at 120fps and lets the entry-level SoC support Quick Charge 4+ while tapping into USB-C 3.2 Gen 1 connectors. Compatible with Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 5.1 Snapdragon X61 5G modem with aptX for audio. Still no Wi-Fi 6 on the list, so…
Anyway, the new Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 should materialize very soon on mobile. We should already see it collectively supplying smartphones in the second half of 2023, especially with Chinese manufacturers Redmi and Vivo, which will be the first brands that will be able to take advantage of it. Logically, the Redmi Note 12R, which is in the works for a few days, should be the first device with the second generation Snapdragon 4 processor. It is expected to be in China on June 30.
