UK buys 100,000 doses of monkeypox vaccine

British officials announced on Tuesday that the government had purchased 100,000 new doses of the monkeypox virus vaccine.

The American news agency Associated Press (AP) reported that obtaining new doses comes after recording more than 2,130 cases across the country, as of Tuesday, the majority of them in the capital, London.

In this context, the UK’s Health Security Agency emphasized that “in the majority of cases, patients are gay or bisexual men (…) The infection is transmitted primarily by close contact between people in interconnected sexual networks.”

Remember that the British authorities extended the vaccination against monkeypox in June.

This vaccination campaign targeted not only health professionals, but gays and bisexuals as well, who are most at risk of exposure to monkeypox.

On July 7, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced that it had recorded more than 6,000 confirmed cases of monkeypox worldwide, including three deaths, since the beginning of the year.

Monkeypox virus is a rare virus similar to human smallpox that was first discovered in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the 1970s.

The monkeypox virus, or “monkeypox,” causes headache, fever, and a rash that begins on the face and spreads to the rest of the body.
