Russia on Friday assessed the defense agreement signed earlier in the day between the US and Ukraine as a simple “piece of paper” with no real binding value.

“The truth is (these agreements) are just pieces of paper (…). These agreements are nothing and have no legal value,” declared Russian diplomatic spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, as quoted by the Russian press agency.
Ukraine signed defense deals with the United States and Japan on Thursday, after doing the same with several Western countries in recent months, including France and the United Kingdom.
These documents are essentially promises by these countries to continue to provide long-term military and financial support to counter Russian aggression.
According to Maria Zakharova, these documents are above all aimed at “citizens in Ukraine (…) it seems that the world community is still with them”. “In fact, they are legally absolving themselves of any responsibility for Ukraine's future,” he added.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Thursday that the ten-year deal signed with the United States “paves the way for Ukraine's integration into NATO.”
This document, in the terms of the text, should contribute to “deterring and countering any future aggression”.
