WASHINGTON, June 3 (Reuters) – U.S. President Joe Biden said on Friday that a “crisis (is) averted” after Congress passed a debt ceiling bill.
During his first speech from the Oval Office, Joe Biden called on Americans to overcome their differences, explaining that reconciliation with Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy proved it was possible.
“Whatever political problems we face, we must see ourselves as fellow citizens, not as adversaries,” Joe Biden said.
The US president has said he will sign the legislation on Saturday, before June 5, when the federal government can no longer make payments.
“It’s important to get a deal, and that’s very good news for the American people. Nobody got everything they wanted, but the American people got what they needed,” Joe Biden said.
“We avoided an economic crisis, an economic collapse,” he said. (Reporting by Jeff Mason and Trevor Hunnicutt; French editing by Camille Raynaud)
