Florida Governor Against Chinese ‘Influence’
Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who is tipped to run for president in 2024, on Monday passed laws aimed at “countering the influence” of Beijing.
“We don’t want the Chinese Communist Party” in Florida launched an elected conservatism at a press conference, accusing “American elites” of “ignoring this problem for far too long.” Elected to lead Florida in 2018, Ron DeSantis drew attention by turning his state into a laboratory of conservative ideas.
The measures would allow Florida to counter China’s “economic, strategic and security” threats, the Republican, who could launch a race for his party’s nomination at any time, promised.
“Discriminatory” measures
One of the laws announced Monday prohibits anyone who lives in China and does not have permanent resident status in the United States from buying property in their state. It also restricts Russian, North Korean, Iranian, Cuban, Venezuelan and Syrian citizens — considered “foreign countries at risk” — from acquiring farmland or property near a military installation.
On Monday, Ron DeSantis tightened the TikTok ban on state officials’ phones and banned Florida universities from developing partnerships with Chinese companies.
These measures were criticized by local democratic opposition parties as discriminatory. Several US states are also considering restricting the acquisition of land and real estate by foreigners.
