Last week, Volkswagen introduced two of its compact cars that will receive a light dusting of dust for 2025.
As expected, the Golf R will get a few more horses under the hood with total output increasing from 315 hp to 328 hp, still powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. This horse will be tamed only by a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and torque will be sent to all four wheels via a 4Motion all-wheel drive system.
Aesthetically, the headlights and taillights, as well as the front and rear bumpers, have been redesigned. New, lighter 19-inch wheels called “Warmenau” also made their debut.
The cabin won't be outdone by the addition of a completely redesigned multimedia system with a larger (10.2-inch) touchscreen. However, the Golf R retains the controversial touch buttons on the steering wheel.
Volkswagen Canada has confirmed to us that the first 2025 Golf R won’t arrive until spring 2025. Details on the model in North America will be known later this year. For those interested, the automaker will extend the production run for the 2024 model to meet demand. The Canadian branch tells us it’s trying to assemble hand-built versions to meet demand.
Jetta is refreshed
The Jetta compact sedan also gets a refresh for 2025 that focuses on its front fascia, which includes a subtle feature in some trim. The cabin also gains a new so-called “floating” touchscreen and tactile switches.
Mechanically, the production version loses the manual gearbox in favor of an eight-speed automatic that directs a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder (158 hp). The GLI keeps the manual transmission alive, the last VW model to do so here. The six-speed gearbox will work in tandem with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission to direct a 228-hp, 2.0-liter four-cylinder.
For sale from Q3 at prices yet to be determined.
