“In response to the Russian Federation’s unjustified expulsion of two U.S. ambassadors from our embassy in Moscow, the State Department has done the same by declaring two Russian ambassadors in the United States persona non grata,” a U.S. diplomatic spokeswoman announced.
On September 14, Russia announced the expulsion of two US diplomats suspected of passing information on the conflict in Ukraine to the US, accused of serving as “liaison” agents for a former Russian employee arrested earlier this year.
Washington immediately promised a timely response, which it did three weeks later.
The mutual withdrawals come at a time when relations between Russia and the United States, one of Ukraine’s main financial and military backers, are at their lowest ebb, where Moscow has been waging an offensive since February 2022.
