Tech giants continue to adhere to the guidelines of the Digital Markets Act (DMA). While Apple has just announced significant changes to the iPhone following this new European legislation, Meta is also working on making WhatsApp compatible before the March 6, 2024 deadline.
In detail, Mark Zuckerberg's group must allow users of its private messages to communicate with other platforms. The latest WhatsApp iOS beta shows that this feature is ready to arrive in the coming weeks.
Through a blog post published on Wednesday, January 24, 2024, WABetaInfo A screenshot was shared showing a new section at the top of the Archived Messages folder: Third party cats. The opportunity for users to find and respond to all their discussions from other messaging services.
Please note that the Digital Markets Act (DMA) only requires large companies to allow the exchange of messages between different platforms. Hence, voice and video calling, sharing of photos, videos, documents or any other features will remain exclusive to each app.
Meta's other large messaging services should also allow for this interoperability, such as Instagram and Messenger, which currently have 2.4 billion and 1.3 billion users respectively. For their part, smaller messaging apps won't have to adhere to these DMA rules.
