While Windows 11 is struggling to establish itself against Windows 10, and Microsoft is only considering AI for the future of the PC with Copilot+, the latest operating system has yet to say its final word. This is especially evident by the arrival of the major update 24H2 for “Later this year“.In order to prepare for this deployment, Microsoft has just made it available for download to testers in the Release Preview channel.
New features of version 24H2
After you install this version (Build 26100.712) of Windows Update (referred to as an optional update), Windows 11 has several new features. We can especially mention the support for HDR wallpapers and wifi 7, the possibility of creating 7zip and TAR archives from the file explorer, or even a new power saving tool in favor of the battery at the expense of interface fluidity.
Windows 11 will also get a drop-down display for the Quick Settings drop-down menu in the taskbar. Support for Bluetooth LE devices is expected to expand, and Voice Clarity will be there to improve audio quality in apps. Finally, the sudo command appears, as does part of Rust in the Windows kernel.
Copilot to replace Cortana and others
Microsoft notes that installing Windows 11 24H2 will remove Tips, WordPad, and especially Cortana apps. The latter makes way for an enhanced Copilot experience, via an app pinned to the taskbar (you can download it from the Microsoft Store in Europe).
However, new AI-based features recently announced, such as Recall, will only be offered to users with the future Copilot+ software, intended for compatible devices that will be available soon.
