(BRAMPTON) Jamie Lee Rattrey scored the game-winner in the ninth round of a shootout as Canada beat the United States 4-3 in the opening round of the Women’s World Hockey Championship on Monday.
Both the top and second-placed teams in Group A now turn their attention to the quarter-finals on Thursday.
Sarah Fillier picked up an assist, while Marie-Philippe Poulin and Laura Stacey scored Canada’s goals. Ann-Renée Desbiens wins in net.
Hannah Bilka, with a goal and assist, Hilary Knight and Amanda Kessel scored for the Americans. Aerin Frankel suffered defeat.
Canada took a 3-1 lead with 2:27 left after Stacey scored into an empty net.
But the Americans did not have their last word.
Knight scored on a rebound 39 seconds into the game.
Knight were unable to capitalize on a penalty in extra-time and were disappointed to be pulled away by the Despians shortly after.
